Fleet Air Arm Legends: Supermarine by Mathew Willis
Renowned naval aviation author Matthew Willis tells the story of the Supermarine Seafire - a navalized version of the famous Spitfire adapted for use on aircraft carriers. Some 2646 examples were built and saw action with the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm from November 1942 until after the Korean War in the early 1950s. It was involved in combat during the Allied landings in North Africa (Operation Torch), the Allied invasions of Sicily and Italy, the D-Day landings, and Operation Dragoon in southern France. With the Pacific fleet, the Seafire proved capable of intercepting and destroying the feared Japanese kamikaze attack aircraft.Matthew Willis is an aviation and naval historian and writer. He grew up near the Orwell estuary, where the naval station in Harwich and the Marine Aircraft Evaluation Establishment at Felixstowe piqued his interest in naval aviation. In 2007, he published his first book on the Blackburn Skua and Roc WW2 naval dive bomber/fighter, followed by a co-authored book on the Junkers Ju87 'Stuka' in 2008 and a book on the Sopwith Pup in 2015. In 2016, a book on the Fairey Flycatcher and another on the Fairey Barracuda will be released.
