This book combines the best qualities of a drills book and a softball-specific guide to sport psychology, helping the reader to make the link between developing mental skills and improving on-field performance. The text is informative yet easy to read; the drills provide softball-specific instruction with practical application by integrating mental and physical skills. The first two chapters explain their approach and the mental preparation necessary for successful competition, followed by a chapter on each of the primary softball skills. A team-building chapter concludes the book by putting it into the context of a team sport and illustrating the benefits of and tactics for team cohesion.
Gloria Solomon holds a PhD from the University of California at Berkeley, with an emphasis in sport psychology and sociology. As a certified sport psychologist, she has worked with athletic teams, including softball, at California at Berkeley, Virginia, Texas Christian, and Cal State Sacramento. Currently an assistant professor at Cal State Sacramento, Dr. Solomon has researched and written extensively on maximising the mental approach during competition and is also the book and resource review editor for The Sport Psychologist. Andrea Becker is a graduate assistant softball coach and master's student in sport psychology at Cal State Sacramento. A co-captain for Cal State Sacramento's softball team from 1999-2001, Becker has coached various levels of competition in the Amateur Softball Association summer leagues.
