Forged Metal by Lesley Campbell
Alexandra Brookes is a successful commodity broker, but in 1991 she is stale. Her lover and fellow trader, Sol Bergman, has left for New York and Alex is looking for a fresh challenge. A chance encounter with Maxim Volkov, a Russian merchant who organizes the sale of metal on behalf of the Russian smelters who produce it, could just represent the opportunity she is looking for. He is keen to learn how the London Metal Exchange works, and Alex is keen to teach him. As Alex explores the Russian metal markets, she discovers that since the collapse of Communism Western industrialists have been exploiting the Russians, comprehensively cheating them out of money through negotiating contracts at way below their market value. In the cutthroat world of futures trading, she devises a brilliant strategy to help the beleaguered Russians, to redress the balance and net her company a record brokerage fee into the bargain. But she has no idea just how corrupt the whole enterprise is. Confronted by this moral maze, she discovers that business is business, friends cannot always be trusted, and that any decision she makes could have life-threatening consequences.
Born in Glasgow, Lesley Campbell used to work for a prestigious commodity broker with responsibility for Russia, Australia and southern Europe. She lives in West London with her two children. Forged Metal is her first novel, she is currently working on her second.
