Berlie Doherty read English at Durham University and worked as a social worker before bringing up her family. In 1978 she became a teacher. Her first book, 'How Green You Are!' was published in 1982, and since then she has written full-time.
Nick Maland graduated in English and Drama in 1981. He pursued a career in the theatre and an interest in drawing. He was shortlisted for the Mother Goose Award in 1996 (for Welcome Night) and the Children's Book Award in 1998 (for Brave Whale).
