Forth to the Mighty Conflict by Allen Cronenberg

Alabama and its people played a conspicuous role in World War II. Not only were thousands of servicemen trained at military facilities in the state - at Fort McClellan, Camp Rucker, Camp Sibert, Maxwell Air Field, and Tuskegee Army Air Field - but Axis prisoners of war were interned in camps on Alabama soil, most notably at Aliceville and Opelika. More than 45,000 Alabama citizens were killed in combat or died as POWs, some came home injured, and many labored in war factories at home. When first published in 1995, Forth to the Mighty Conflict was well received. Allen Cronenberg weaves the stories of individuals and military units into a compelling narrative. Ultimately, he chronicles the sweeping impact of the war on Alabama; how it affected politics in the state and brought about important changes in education, social services, health care, religion, and race relations.
This book is a welcome contribution to knowledge of how specific localities and individuals participated in [the] global conflict, for example.. the development of Huntsville as a site for the production of chemical warfare agents; of Talledega County as a center for ordnance production; and of Mobile as a major port for both shipping and shipbuilding. - American Historical Review; ""A reader who knows nothing of World War II will gain a broad understanding of the war and America's role in it without an exaggerated notion of one state's contributions. Black Americans, accustomed to shabby treatment in histories, novels, and movies about World War II, will appreciate Cronenberg's honest appraisal of their participation."" - Business Library Review; ""A clearly written study based on solid research.... Cronenberg has adroitly balanced developments in the state with the larger issues of the national effort. Highly recommended."" - Choice
