Forty Years on by Alan Bennett

Taking the form of an end-of-term play at a minor public school, "Forty Years On" presents a satirical review of recent English history. The play was first performed in 1968 with John Gielgud and Bennett himself in the leading roles. "Getting On" is about the personal life of a Labour MP and won the Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy in 1971. Also included in this book is the play "Habeous Corpus", a witty farce set in Brighton's plush area of Hove and "Enjoy" which uncannily foresaw the attitudes to English working-class life now enshrined in the theme parks of the UK. The author of the plays also provides an introduction to the background and writing of each play.
