The Foundations of Mindfulness by Eric Harrison

An Essential Addition to Mindfulness Literature

In 1949, Eric Harrison was born in Wellington, New Zealand. He earned a degree in English literature and music from Victoria University and began his career as a schoolteacher and journalist. He spent 18 months doing retreats in the Burmese, Tibetan, Zen, and yoga traditions between 1974 and 1985. While he valued the opportunity to participate in long retreats, he discovered that Buddhism itself did not appeal to him. Eric selected secular, scientific, and science-based terminology to describe meditation when he launched the Perth Meditation Centre in 1987.

He eventually added to his expertise by studying biology, cognitive science, and Western philosophy for five years. This approach earned him the respect of the many doctors and psychologists who referred people to him, as well as the businesses that have hired him thereafter. His previous six publications, including Teach Yourself to Meditate and The 5-Minute Meditator, have been translated into 14 languages, and he has taught meditation to 30,000 individuals.
