Four Brothers in Arms by Ian Mcgill

A fascinating record of leadership and service about a family that endured war in many guises and extensive hardship with humility and the utmost fortitude. General Sir Peter Wall

The book describes four brothers' experiences on the North West Frontier of India in the 1930s, throughout the Second World War, during the partition of India in 1947 and the Malayan Emergency in the 1950s as well as a rare insight into their mother's precarious isolation during the war in Jersey under German occupation.

McGill, Ian: - Ian McGill was born in Quetta in 1946. His father, one of the four brothers in this book, was then serving with the 8th Gurkha Rifles in the uncertain period before India's partition. The family moved to Zimbabwe the following year and soon settled on a farm. Ian joined the British Army in 1965 and his military experience included service with commando and airborne forces, operational tours in Northern Ireland, Kuwait and Bosnia and leading the Royal Engineers as their professional head (Engineer-in-Chief). He was awarded the CBE in 1998 and the Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service in 1999. He left the Army as a Brigadier in 2001.

He is married to Mary. They have a son who is a history teacher, a daughter working in television and two young granddaughters.
