FRANK SHORTER has won 24 national titles, as well as the 1972 Olympic marathon. Shorter was voted to the United States Senate as an advocate for children's rights and a frequent contributor to nationally televised broadcasts of distance running events. In 1984, he was inducted into the Olympic Hall of Fame. He lives in Boulder, Colorado. JOHN BRANT is a freelance sportswriter whose writing has appeared in seven editions of The Best American Sports Writing. He lives in Portland, Oregon, and is a frequent contributor to Runner's World magazine as well as the author or coauthor of three prior running books.
