From Chinos to Kilos by Stevie Bates
Stevie was only ten when his father died. It derailed him and was soon expelled from school.
He joined the Merchant Navy at 15 after serving a term in the Young Offenders Institute. Although he enjoyed the work on the ship which took him from Whitehaven to Casablanca, he longed for more adventure.
When he was offered a position in a 'Deep Sea Tramp' by a man who would turn out to be his mentor, he jumped at it, unaware of the adventure that would take him round the world several times. At 16, when most of his friends were still in school, Stevie was plunged into two of the world's oldest professions: smuggling and prostitution.
From Chinos to Kilos is the story of Stevie, written from memory 20 years later, from a Moroccan prison.
