From Harvey River by Lorna Goodison
'Throughout her life my mother lived in two places at once: Kingston, Jamaica, where she raised a family of nine children, and Harvey River, in the parish of Hanover, where she was born and grew up.' In From Harvey River, Lorna Goodison introduces us to her forebears, the first family of Harvey River - all glorious characters who will find a place in your heart. Albertha - or 'Miss Jo' - is a serious soul who seems unable to smile; Howard is a beautiful boy, who dies an early death; tender-hearted Rose inspires devotion, but her own hearts desires are never fulfilled; Edmund yeans for the freedoms of the big city; and Lorna's mother, Doris, is large-hearted, practical, and has a bottomless cooking pot that often feeds more than just her family... Lorna Goodison's memoir weaves together memory and island lore to create a vivid and universally appealing tapestry.
'Captivating.. Being introduced to the cast of From Harvey River is like sitting down at the family dining table. You'll stay for the day and then on into the evening as each new character pulls up a chair. You could not be in better company.' New York Times 'Beautiful is the life Goodison evokes from the far-distant past... A window that opens onto a society that most of us will never know.' Washington Post
