From Silence to Sanctuary by Jane Chevous
Many churches now have child protection policies, and yet, despite growing awareness, there is still a great need for greater understanding of abuse of all kinds. An essential read for all those who have experienced abuse themselves, pastors and youth workers, this guide explains the effect of all kinds of abuse on the victim, abusers and the wider community. It goes on to give guidelines for good leadership and pastoral care to prevent abuse and to support survivors. Separate chapters deal with working with offenders.
Jane Chevous is the project director of Just42, a Christian charity working with children and young people in rural Suffolk. She is qualified in youth and social work and has over twenty-five years experience in the field - including both local authority and church youth officer posts and a spell as the assistant course director for the Centre for Youth Ministry at Ridley Hall, Cambridge, where she still tutors part-time. She has fostered abused teenagers and is a survivor of sexual, physical and pastoral abuse as a young person and an adult. She is a founding member of S:Vox: Survivors' Voices, a new organisation offering self-help and support, advocacy, training and education for survivors and their supporters.
