From the Grand Canal to the Dodder by Beatrice M Doran

The Dublin suburbs situated between the Grand Canal and the River Dodder consist of distinct neighbourhoods, each with their own character and style. It is an area that was, and continues to be, home to poets, writers, artists, politicians and academics, all of whom, in their own way, contributed to Irish life. Those featured include: Jack B. Yeats, artist; Mother Mary Aikenhead, Founder of the Religious Order; Brendan Behan, writer and dramatist; Mary Lady Heath, aviator and international athlete; Sophie Bryant, mathematician, educationist and suffragette; James Franklin Fuller, architect and Seamus Heaney, poet. In this book, Dr Beatrice M. Doran tells of the lives of some of the most fascinating people who once lived on the leafy roads and avenues of this interesting area of the city.
"Doran writes in a crisp, engaging style that brings life to her subjects"
"A sort of who's who of the writers, artists, politicians and other eccentrics who have lived in that corner of South Dublin sometimes known as Baggotonia..."
"Some of the 70 short biographies in this well-written book are of well-known figures; other were once well known but are now largely forgotten."
Dr Beatrice Doran was educated at Muckross and University College Dublin. A librarian by profession, Beatrice has worked in a number of libraries, including the Royal Dublin Society, the University of Ulster, the University College Cork and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland where she was Library Director. She is an Associate and former President of the Library Association of Ireland. Beatrice has a BA, a Diploma in Librarianship, an MBA and a Phd from University College Dublin. Local history and archaeology are particular interests of hers, and she was active in the Cork Historical & Archaeological Society as vice-president, council member and honorary organiser.
