Frontier Mission by Walter Brownlow Posey
In this first major study of religion in the South prior to the Civil War, Mr. Posey surveys the work of seven chief denominations -- Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Disciples of Christ, Cumberland Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, and Protestant Episcopal -- as they developed in the present states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Missouri.
The author of earlier works on the Methodists, the Presbyterians, and the Baptists, Walter Brownlow Posey was educated at the University of Chicago and at Vanderbilt University. He is chairman of the department of history at Agnes Scott College and is also professor of history at Emory University. His most recent work is Religious Strife on the Southern Frontier.
