Julie Rugg is Senior Research Fellow in Social Policy and Social Work at the University of York, UK. She was Advisor to the Environment, Transport and the Regions Select Committee in 2001-2. She is author of Churchyard and Cemetery: Tradition and Modernity in Rural North Yorkshire, and has written papers and book chapters on subjects including the science of grave management, churchyard commemoration, cemeteries and industrial heritage, cemetery conservation, and the dead body.Brian Parsons, PhD, has worked in the funeral industry in London since 1982. He focuses on training staff and also researching the history of funeral service. He is author of The London Way of Death, Committed to the Cleansing Flame: The Development of Cremation in Nineteenth Century England, London Cemeteries: An Illustrated Guide and Gazetteer (with Hugh Meller), The Undertaker at Work: 1900-1950 and The Changing Face of the British Funeral Industry in The Twentieth Century: From Undertaker to Funeral Director.
