Born in Nottingham, Alan Sillitoe left school at fourteen and worked in local factories until he joined the Ministry of Aircraft Production in 1945. His first book, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, published in 1958 and a huge bestseller, was made into a major film, as was his next book, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. Since then he has published some forty works of prose, poetry and drama, including two volumes of autobiography.
