Barry Redfern was Chief Superintendent with Northumbria Police before retirement. He then turned his attention to the history of crime and criminology in the region. His previous books include The Shadow of the Gallows: crime and punishment in Newcastle in the eighteenth century (2003), and Victorian Villains: prisoners from Newcastle Gaol 1871-1873 (2006).
