Summary

In 1945, a reviewer remarked on the emergence of a "cycle of mystery and horror pictures (that were) placed in the gaslight era of the turn of the century". This title examines these films and looks to explain what prompted film-makers to look to the gaslight era at the time they did.

Gaslight Melodrama by Guy

Guy Barefoot explores Hollywood's fascination in the 1940s, with late Victorian or Edwardian settings. All of the films studied are crime melodramas - films that feature a narrative pattern of sensation and reparation, and that involve crime, investigation and identification.
Guy Barefoot is associate professor of film studies at the University of Leicester. He is the author of The Lost Jungle: Cliffhanger Action and Hollywood Serials of the 1930s and 1940s (2016).
