Gaza by Cathy Sultan
Hamas entered southern Israel on October 7, killing Israeli soldiers and civilians. Israel retaliated, killing upward of 38,000 Palestinians and wounding some 80,000 others. For decades the plight of the Palestinian people has been ignored. Hamas's actions and Israel's response have put issues of apartheid, genocide and famine front and center. Students and activists from around the world have taken up the Palestinian cause and selflessly made it their own.
Cathy Sultan is an award-winning author of three nonfiction books: A Beirut Heart: One Woman's War; Israeli & Palestinian Voices: A Dialogue with Both Sides; and Tragedy in South Lebanon. A Beirut Heart was translated into Chinese in 2013. The Syrian, a political thriller, was her first work of fiction. Sultan is also a peace activist who recently stepped down from six years on the Board of Directors of the Interfaith Peace Builders (IFPB), an NGO based in Washington, D.C. She took her first trip to Israel/Palestine in March 2002 and subsequently co-lead five delegations there on behalf of IFPB, including one to Gaza in 2012. Sultan won USA's Best Book Award and Best Autobiography of 2006 for A Beirut Heart; USA's Best Book of the Year in the category of History/Politics for Israeli and Palestinian Voices: A Dialogue with both Sides; 2006 Midwest Book Awards-Honorable Mention in the Category of Political Science for Israeli and Palestinian Voices.
