Gender Circuits by Eve Shapiro

Gender Circuits explores the impact of new technologies on the gendered lives of individuals through substantive sociological analysis and in-depth case studies. Examining the complex intersections between gender ideologies, social scripts, information and biomedical technologies, and embodied identities, this book explores whether and how new technologies are reshaping what it means to be a gendered person in contemporary society.

"This smart, provocative, and readable book explores how the stuff of science fiction has become normalized in our contemporary societyThe book's accessibility is enhanced by the author's willingness to lead the reader through her own personal and political explorations of these themes, while bringing in the latest gender and biotechnology scholarship."
Meika Loe, Sociology and Women’s Studies, Colgate University

"Eve Shapiro’s Gender Circuits presents a sociological understanding of gender and technology in our lives today that is theoretically complex and accessible, if not downright personable. This is a book that will be embraced by Internet savvy generation of students and teaching scholars interested in the complexities of gender, bodies, discourse, selves, and technology today. "
—Kendal Broad, Sociology and Women’s Studies, University of Florida

"In this highly accessible and provocative text, Eve Shapiro explores the relationship between our embodied, gendered selves and a range of technologies—from cosmetic surgery to cell phones, from online gaming to tattooing. Gender Circuits will be invaluable to any classroom committed to exploring gender and technology as vantage points on a range of social inequalities and identities."
—Jessica Fields, Sociology, San Francisco State University

'The content of Gender Circuits is diverse and always interesting.'

'Anyone with an interest in gender studies and/or the influence that technology has upon our everyday lives and identities should consider Shapiro’s Gender Circuits as an excellent resource. Shapiro engages her audience by drawing them into her research through the use of text boxes and case studies, which enable her to explore issues in greater detail, and provides a stimulating read for all. Gender Circuits is a fine addition to the fields of gender, technology, and especially cyberculture studies.'
-Erin Stark, Curtin University, in Somatechnics 2011
