Orwell's ability to convey a moral and political perspective is examined as a response to the atmosphere and the political events of the period. The book discusses his desire to become a novelist and the extent to which he was influenced by his literary models. Valerie Meyers' previous titles include "George Orwell: An Annotated Bibliography of Criticism", co-edited with Jeffrey Meyers. Jeffrey Meyers is the author of Scott Fitzgerald: A Biography, Gary Cooper: American Hero, and Orwell: Wintry Conscience of a Generation. Valerie Meyers is the author of a book on Orwell's fiction and articles on Wyndham Lewis, Hemingway and Barbara Pym. The Meyers live in Berkeley, California.
