Ghost of a Chance by Susan Maupin Schmid

Mike Brodie leads an erratic life. A professional saxophonist/voice-over specialist, Mike often has to explain away the fact that she isn?t actually a man, as so many tend to assume given her name and business. Paul, Mike's irritatingly pushy manager, ensures that her calendar is always full to the seams with bookings, so she spends her time rushing between various gigs and voiceover jobs, while simultaneously looking out for her now grown-up goddaughter, Raffi. When Mike at last decides it's time for a well-earned break, she heads for Bewick Grange in Ruttersford, a stately home maintained by her friend, Maggie. As she approaches the house down a heavily wooded road, her car is attacked by a group of men, causing her to swerve and crash. Despite appearances, however, this turns out to be a mere case of mistaken identity, but it is not the last of the strange happenings that begin to plague the small village of Ruttersford. When Mike discovers a body floating in an ornamental pool, she quickly finds herself swept up in a tale of murder, mystery and intrigue?
SUSAN MAUPIN SCHMID is the author of 100 Dresses: If the Magic Fits and Ghost of a Chance. When Susan was seven, she read Betsy's Little Star, a really old book about a girl who wants red shoes. Until then, Susan had only worn sensible brown shoes to school and toe-pinching black Mary Janes to church. Unfortunately, Susan's mother did not think Susan needed red shoes. She probably didn't, but she never stopped wanting pretty shoes. When she was a fifth grader, her mother sent Susan to the local shoe store to buy sneakers. And there in the window were grass-green Keds, just the same shade as the outfit she was wearing! Susan had to have those shoes! So she bought them. And she was very happy, despite the fact that she had to wear them with everything--whether they matched or not. Susan is currently on the lookout for a great pair of turquoise sandals.
