Jewelle Gomez is a writer and activist who is the author of THE GILDA STORIES (1991), which won two Lambda Awards. The Urban Bush Women group staged her stage interpretation of the book, Bones & Ash: a Gilda Tale, in thirteen American cities. The Paperback Book Club designated the script as a Triangle Classic. THE LIPSTICK PAPERS, FLAMINGOES AND BEARS, and ORAL TRADITION are among her other works. She edited SWORDS OF THE RAINBOW, a fantasy pieces anthology with Eric Garber, and chose fiction for Cleis' THE BEST LESBIAN EROTICA OF 1997.
She's also the author of FORTY-THREE SEPTEMBERS, a collection of personal and political essays, and DON'T EXPLAIN, a collection of short fiction. She has worked in philanthropy for many years and was previously the executive director of the Poetry Center and the American Poetry Archives at San Francisco State University. She was the former head of the New York State Council on the Arts' Literature program, as well as the director of Horizon's Grants and Community Projects and the President of the San Francisco Library Commission. She currently resides in San Francisco.
Alexis Pauline Gumbs was designated one of the 50 Visionaries Changing the World by UTNE Readers, a Reproductive Reality Check Shero, a Black Woman Rising nominee, and the first-ever Too Hot for 501c3 awards. She is one of the co-founders of the MobileHomecoming experience archive and documentary project, which has been featured in Curve Magazine, the Huffington Post, Durham Magazine, and NPR. She is currently residing in Durham, North Carolina.
