A story set in Wester Ross in 1809, when the fear of a Napoleonic invasion was widespread and rocketing meat and wool prices encouraged many landowners to begin clearing the highlands for sheep farming. Adam Metcalfe is sent to work as Deputy Factor of Menardmore on the estate of Lord Alcaster.
One of Scotland`s best-loved authors, Nigel Tranter wrote over ninety novels on Scottish history. He died at the age of ninety on 9 January 2000.
