Gimme the Money by Iva Pekarkova
To Gin, driving a taxi seems the easiest way to earn some quick money in New York. After all she?s smart, street wise and can take care of herself. Wildly humourous but also poignant and moving, this assured novel brilliantly brings to life a colourful collection of no-hopers, money-grabbers, fraudsters, believers and lovers. Gloria (the Cuban lesbian artist), Josito (the child of a jailbird), Alex (the Russian mobster). Kenny (the African-American cab dispatcher), Tailbe (the legal immigrant worth marrying for a green card), Ouagadougou (a man looking to marry for his green card) and the unnamed gun-wielding psychopath all have one thing in common. They all want...the money!

While living in Prague under Soviet domination, Iva Pekárková was forced to enter a nationwide literary contest. First prize was a 'Friendship-train' ride to Moscow. When her essay won, she declined to accept the prize and defected to the West. In Boston Iva wrote her first novel, Truck Stop Rainbows. Her second novel, The World is Round, describes life in an Austrian refugee camp, where Iva had spent a year. To support herself and research her latest novel Gimme The Money, Iva spent five years driving a taxi in New York City.
