Giving Ground by Colm O'gaora
This is a finely crafted and richly evocative first collection. From an Irish landscape that runs into the Atlantic to distant, unfamiliar cities, Colm O'Gaora's stories occupy the territory of love and loss. Moments of bitter-sweet epiphany are captures in a single image: A plane tree in the urban fairy-tale 'The Carnival of Light'; the glass bowl of cut silver hair from 'In This World'; a river transformed in 'Train Above the City'. These stories are about conflict and choices: between the old and the new; staying or leaving; loyalty or betrayal.
Colm O'Gaora was born in Dublin in 1966. His stories have been shortlisted for a number of literary awards; 'Magnets' appeared in Best Short Stories 1991. He lives in London.
