Gloucestershire by Richard Sale
Gloucestershire holds a special place in the heart of Britain - its remarkable range of scenery spans the idyllic villages of the Cotswolds and the Forest of Dean. This book explains the significance of developments in the county, from the first inhabitants to the modern royal profile. Topics covered include: the geography - the Forest of Dean, the Severn Valley and the steep Edge which rise to the high Cotswolds; the people - from the earliest settlers to Dean's Free Miners and W.G. Grace; the buildings - Neolithic tombs, Roman villas, Norman castles, the great wool churches, Regency Cheltenham, cathedrals and abbeys; and the communities - the miners and foresters of Dean's forest and the weavers of the Cotswolds villages.
Richard Sale was raised in Bristol, attended Fairfield Grammar School, and then studied physics at university. He worked as a scientist for many years before deciding to write and take photographs full time. His work centres on his love of wild areas and history. He has published more than thirty books, and is the author of Crowood's Guide to the Cotswolds.
