James R.Newman's Mathematical World James R.Newman's Mathematical World James R.Newman's Mathe Newman (1907-1966) was a rare mathematician and lawyer who served in the US government in a variety of capacities during and after WWII, including Chief Intelligence Officer at the US Embassy in London. The Universe of Mathematics, a four-volume work, was initially published in 1956 and reissued by Dover in 2000. It was the result of a fifteen-year effort by Newman, then a member of the Scientific American Editorial Board, to compile in one book what he thought to be the most important writings in the area. It is this book that has exposed generations of students to the breadth and depth of mathematical literature.

In the Author's Own Words: The Theory of Groups is a field of mathematics in which one applies a function to something and then compares the result to the result produced by applying the same function to something else, or something else to the same object. The discovery of the planet Neptune in 1846 was a dramatic and remarkable mathematical astronomical achievement. The existence of this new member of the solar system, as well as its precise location, were demonstrated with pencil and paper, leaving onlookers with only the customary chore of directing their telescopes at the area noted by the mathematicians. ― James R. ― James R. ― James
