Going Green by Heather S Ransom
Calyssa Brentwood, an entitled high school senior who has just finished her chloroplast cellular enhancement in order to go Green, is now the newest citizen of the Green Commonwealth of SciCity, on her way to finding her place in the upper ranks of her community . . . until she meets Gabe Stayton, an unlikely lab partner, gifted in science and math, and the only person she knows who has chosen to not be enhanced. Through a series of unusual events, Lyssa, a true city girl, ends up at a farm for spring break during the middle of a rebel insurgency that jeopardizes the safety of Green citizens. For the first time in her life, she must face a battle that threatens the lives of those around her as she learns that nothing is as simple as it seems on the surface. Can she save what she loves most in her life? Or is the price too high?
Heather's twenty-four years as a middle school science teacher have given her an intimate glimpse into the brains of thousands of young adults, the majority of whom are desperate to find their place in a society that is continuously changing around them. Reading has provided many people with an escape, ideas for dealing with obstacles, or just hope for a future when they can make a difference. Heather has her students read every year, despite the fact that she teaches science. And they imagine their futures together, telling stories about technological advancements that could revolutionize the planet. Heather came from a family of storytellers.
Her mother told incredible, fantastic tales of living in a pond with tadpoles, traveling across dusty hills as Native Americans, and howling at the moon with coyotes with her brother and sister. Heather took on the role of the character while her mother delivered the story. As she swam with Wally Wadpole, she felt the water moving through her gills. While riding her horse, Many Moons, on the hunt for food for her community, she got a taste of the dust in her tongue.
Long after the stories were finished, she heard the coyotes calling her to come play. Heather fell in love with a good story, one that drew her into a world so real she couldn't bear to leave. This is what she wishes to convey to her audience. Heather enjoys spending time with her husband, Marv, and their two lovely adult children, Danielle and Marvin, when she is not teaching or writing.
She has the privilege of living in Grants Pass, Oregon, where she can enjoy the great outdoors while also helping out at their local enterprises, a pizza bar and a cigar shop. Every day is a different journey. Dream the dream you want, and then figure out how to make it a reality.
