The Golden Century by Maurice Ashley

Although the seventeenth century was one of continuous wars and revolutions, the achievements in the arts and sciences made it for Europe a golden age. Here is the Spain of Cervantes and Velazquez, the Amsterdam of Hals and Rembrandt, the London of Milton and Shakespeare, the Antwerp of Rubens and the Paris of Moliere all intertwined with modern historical analysis.
Maurice Ashley was born in 1907 and was educated at St Paul's School and New College, Oxford. He was on the editorial staff of the MANCHESTER GUARDIAN, THE TIMES and BRITAIN TODAY. He was Editor of THE LISTENER between 1958 and 1967. Maurice Ashley died in 1995.
