Golden Gate Bridge by Donald Macdonald

Architect Donald Macdonald designed the Golden Gate Bridge's current tollbooths and bike rail, set the guidelines for it's retrofit, and is at the centre of the discussion around the subject of the proposed suicide barrier design. Through his eyes the balance of aesthetics, geometry, and engineering that fashion the bridge is made clear. His friendly, accessible text and truly charming hand-drawn illustrations make it easy for readers to dig into nitty-gritty architectural and technical details of why the bridge was built the way it was and how it became an icon.
Donald MacDonald is the first architect to work on the Golden Gate Bridge since the original consulting architects John Eberson and Irving F. Morrow. Mr. MacDonald redesigned the Toll Booths to their current form in 1980, installed the new bike rail, and set the guidelines for the bridge's retrofit. He has also been instrumental in the discussion of a possible suicide barrier for the bridge. Ira Nadel is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and recipient of numerous awards and prizes. He has lectured around the world and is the author of a number of books, including biographies of James Joyce, Leonard Cohen, Tom Stoppard, and Ezra Pound.
