His Holiness Shantanand Saraswati Maharej held the position of Shankaracharya of Jyotir Math from 1953 until his retirement in 1980. His predecessor was Gurudeva, who did so much to make mantra meditation available to everyone, and Shantanand Saraswati continued his work helping people from many religious traditions.
