The Good Fairies of New York by Martin Millar
A quirky, punk-inflected urban fantasy chock full of unconventional, humorous takes on fairy folklore for readers of Terry Pratchett and Christopher MooreThe Good Fairies of New York tells the fish-out-of-water story of two Scottish thistle fairies who find themselves in Manhattan. The fairies hook up with two humans, Kerry (complete with colostomy bag) and Dinnie (antisocial in the extreme), finding time to help both get their acts together. A book that brings together race riots and Scottish folklore, The Good Fairies of New York is anything but a typical fairy fantasy.
Martin Millar was born in Glasgow, Scotland, but has spent most of his life in London, England. He's written a variety of works, including novels, plays, short tales, and articles. Suzy, Led Zeppelin, and Me, his most recent work, is set in Glasgow. Love and Peace with Melody Paradise; Milk, Sulphate, and Alby Starvation; Lux the Poet; The Good Fairies of New York; Dreams of Sex and Stage Diving and Ruby; and The Stone Age Diet are among Millar's other works. Millar is a fan of Jane Austen's writings and has written a theater adaptation of Emma.
He even penned the novelization for the film Tank Girl. Last but not least, Millar writes the Thraxas series as Martin Scott. He's written five so far, the first of which won him the World Fantasy Award. Millar enjoys watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer, reading history books, especially those about ancient Greece, and playing the flute when he is not writing.
