Goodnight Drinks by Gary Smillie

This is a funny book for serious times. Mashed through the author´s unconventional, sometimes twisted, filter some of the problems of our age lurch disturbingly into view…and together they make for quite a sight. From Corona, through to Brexit, via political corruption and excellent regional beer, Goodnight Drinks is a collection of stories that will move you to hot, acrid cackles and horrible, soggy tears. Through all heinous machinations, the bizarre fetishes, subtle twists and general absurdity, however, one feature shines through: the human spirit, in all its indomitable oddness. This first collection of short stories is an examination of the human condition and boasts a cast of characters both dastardly and delightful, in equal measure. The often satirical collection spans continents and genres, touching on every day and taboo topics with the same humour and warmth. From sex-addicted octogenarians to metamorphosing financial risk assessors, the full gamut of human eccentricity is laid bare. Sometimes scathing, often tender, these stories will stay with you long after you have turned the final page.
Gary Smillie has an MA in Creative Writing from Liverpool John Moores University and his poems have been published in a variety of online magazines and websites. Since moving to Germany in 2017, he has focused on the short story genre, as showcased in his first collection, Goodnight Drinks.
