She has won a Ford Foundation-National Research Council grant to research the oral tradition in Native American literature, a National Endowment for the Arts writing fellowship, and has also served as an Associate Fellow at the Stanford Humanities Institute. She has received the Before Columbus Foundation's American Book Award, the Native American Prize for Literature, and the Native Writers Circle of the Americas' Lifetime Achievement Award. She resides in the California town of Fort Bragg.
