This book considers the causes of the 1930s depression which was most striking in the USA but whose shock waves of economic crisis were felt the world over. It reveals the experiences both of individuals who were affected by poverty and unemployment and of people who remained in work. It shows how the leadership of different countries found different ways of responding to the crisis. It ends by discussing the lessons learned for the future.

R G Grant studied history at Oxford University. He then worked as a language teacher in Paris and Lisbon before returning home to become a freelance writer. He is the author of numerous works on modern history. His book, New Perspectives: The Holocaust, was shortlisted for the TES Senior Information Book Award of 1998.
