The Great War 1914-1918 by Citizens' Committee To The Ulster Servi

First published in 1919 to accompany the peace celebrations in Belfast that year The Great War 1914-1918 provides not only a record of the actions of Ulster regiments that served on the front line during the First World War but also gives brief accounts of other services in which Ulster men and women played their part.

FROM THE PREFACE This booklet does not profess to be in any sense an account of the manifold activities of the North of Ireland during the Great War. It is merely a few facts put together in souvenir form, which may be of interest to those who had the honour of participating in the historic events which are alluded to within these pages. If undue prominence appears to be given to the 36th Ulster Division, it must be remembered that alone of the divisions of the army it was composed of battalions of Ulster regiments from the beginning of the campaign until the end, and that a large percentage of the men who joined the army from the North of Ireland, especially from Belfast and district, served in the ranks of the Division. Equally gallant were the battalions of the Ulster regiments in the 10th and 16th Divisions and in the regular army. No distinction is made in the measure of praise that is due to Ulstermen of all creeds and classes who joined His Majesty's Forces in a period of great national emergency.
