Adrian Vaughan began learning the signaling routine in 1950 and became a volunteer porter at Challow station in 1953, where he learnt to drive the shunting engine and the complexities of the signaling laws. He became a paid porter at Challow after four and a half years in the Army, and then a signalman at Uffington.
