Greek and the Greeks by Sir Kenneth J Dover

This book contains the majority of Sir Kenneth Dover's published articles on the Greek language and Greek poetry, including styles and registers in Greek, Archilochus, aspects of tragedy and the comic techniques of Aristophanes. Over the last 40 years his contributions to the study of Greek language and history have ranged from a study of Greek word order to analyses of Greek morality and sexuality. He believes that no answer to any question about the ancient Greeks can claim to be more probable than its alternatives unless it is properly founded on what Greek texts actually say. The interpretation of Greek texts require two things: one is perfectionism in matters of language, and the other is willingness to make use of the experience of other cultures, including our own.
