Professor Mittelstaedt previously taught financial reporting courses to undergraduates, master's in accounting students, MBAs, and Executive MBAs at Arizona State University before coming to Notre Dame. He received the Kaneb Undergraduate Teaching Award and the Arnie Ludwig Executive MBA Distinguished Teacher Award while at Notre Dame. His research focuses on financial reporting and retirement benefit concerns, and it has been published in journals such as the Journal of Accounting and Economics, The Accounting Review, Review of Accounting Studies, Journal of Pension Economics and Finance, and others.
He has served on the Editorial Advisory and Review Board for The Accounting Review and is a reviewer for a number of academic journals. In addition, he has testified before the United States Congress on retiree health benefit issues. Professor Mittelstaedt is a past president of the Federation of Schools of Accountancy (FSA), and he was honored with the FSA's 2016 Joseph A. For his contributions to accounting education, he received the Silvoso Award.
He belongs to two professional organizations: the American Accounting Association and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Prior to joining academia, he worked for Price Waterhouse & Co. as an auditor. For outstanding success on the Unified CPA Exam, he was awarded the Elijah Watt Sells Award.
