
Grey Owl by Jane Billinghurst
This book is a testimony to the trapper-turned-conservationist who spent much of his time living with beavers, and whose message Remember, you belong to Nature, not it to you is perhaps more relevant at the end of the century than it was at the beginning.Jane Billinghurst was born and spent her first two years of life in Bombay, India. She then relocated to Surrey, UK, where she was raised. Jane has a master's degree. in German and St. Augustine's philosophy Oxford's Anne's College.
In addition to New Haven, Connecticut, she has resided in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Jane has spent the previous two decades working in book publishing, largely as an editor. She began freelancing for western publisher Prairie Books in Saskatoon after working in-house for Oxford University Press and Yale University Press. She became a full-time employee of that press in 1983 and rose through the ranks to become the publishing director.
She left Prairie Books to work at Douglas & McIntyre in Vancouver as the production, editorial, and art manager. Jane has worked as a freelance editor and writer for adults and young adults since 1992, concentrating in scholarly titles and non-fiction trade publications. Grey Owl (Greystone, 1999) and Spirit of the Whale (Raincoast, 2000) were both nominated for the Saskatchewan Book Award in the area of non-fiction. Temptress (Greystone, 2003), her first book, has been translated into six languages.
She has worked at the Washington State University Skagit County Extension Master Gardener Discovery Garden as a coordinator since 2005. She now makes her home in Anacortes, Washington.
