Hades' Daughter by Sara Douglass
Ancient Greece is a place where mortals are the play things of the gods - but at the core of their city-state is a Labyrinth, where mortals can shape the heavens to their own design. When Theseus comes away from the Labyrinth with the prize and his beloved, the Mistress of the Labyrinth, his future seems assured. But she bears him only a daughter - and when he casts her aside for this, the world changes. From that day forward, the Labyrinths decay, and power fades from the city-states. A hundred years pass, Troy falls, the Trojans scatter. Then Brutus, the warrior-king of Troy, receives a vision of distant shores where he can rebuild the ancient kingdom. He will move heaven and earth to reach his destiny, but in the mists is a woman of power who has her own reasons for luring Brutus to these green shores. If Brutus makes this journey successfully it will be the next step in the Game of the Labyrinth, and the start of a complicated contest of wills to span the centuries.Sara Douglass was born in 1957 in Penola, a tiny farming town in Australia's south. Before her parents relocated her to Adelaide and the more refined surroundings of Methodist Women College, she spent her early years chasing (and being chased by) sheep and collecting snakes. Sara went on to become a nurse at her parents' insistence (it was both feminine and genteel) and spent the next seventeen years plotting and executing her escape. Her escape came in the shape of a Ph.D. in the history of early modern England Sara left nursing after a long period of bare tolerance and accepted a post as a senior lecturer in medieval European history at the Victorian University of La Trobe's Bendigo campus.
Sara sought an escape from the departmental politics of academic life, which she found as insufferable as the emotional rigors of nursing. This came in the shape of one of Sara's early loves: books and writing. Sara's novel BattleAxe (released in North America as The Wayfarer Redemption), the first in the Tencendor series, was picked up by HarperCollins Australia and chosen as the first book in their new fantasy line, which was met with rapid success. Sara has risen to become Australia's premier fantasy author and one of the country's top writers since 1995. Her books are now available in over 100 countries.
