Haiku Mind by Patricia Donegan
Haiku, the Japanese form of poetry written in just three lines, can be miraculous in its power to articulate the profundity of the simplest moment--and for that reason haiku can be a useful tool for bringing us to a heightened awareness of our lives. Here, the poet Patricia Donegan shares her experience of the haiku form as a way of insight that anyone can use to slow down and uncover the beauty of ordinary moments. She presents 108 haiku poems--on themes such as honesty, transience, and compassion--and offers commentary on each as an impetus to meditation and as a key to unlocking the wonder in what we find right before us.Patricia Donegan was a Fulbright scholar to Japan and taught East-West poetics at Naropa University under Allen Ginsberg and Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. She was also a pupil of haiku master Seishi Yamaguchi. She is a meditation teacher and a lifelong member of the Haiku Society of America. She was previously the poetry editor for Kyoto Journal. Love Haiku: Japanese Poems of Yearning, Passion, and Memory (cotranslated with Yoshie Ishibashi), Haiku Mind: 108 Poems to Develop Consciousness and Open Your Heart, Haiku: Asian Arts for Creative Youngsters, and Chiyo-ni Woman Haiku Master (cotranslated with Yoshie Ishibashi) are only a few of her haiku works. Hot Haiku, Bone Poems, Without Warning, Heralding the Milk Light, and haiku choices in other anthologies are among her poetry collections. In 1998, she earned first prize in the Mainichi International Haiku Contest, and the Haiku Society of America awarded her a Merit Book Award for translation for her book on Chiyo-ni. Her haiku publications have blended study and insight to stimulate and nurture a lifelong interest in haiku poetry in both Japanese and English, for both young and old.
