Hard Man of the Swings by Jeanne Willis

Britain has won the war, but Mick is fighting a losing battle. No matter how hard he tries to keep his head down, there's always a bigger fist around the corner. Ignored by his mother, lusted after by his mad cousin and separated from the kid brother he adores, Mick is forced to confront his own worst enemy. Against all the odds, victory is in sight . . . until he discovers the sickening truth about his father. Suddenly, violence, death and Sunday School are the least of Mick's problems.
Jeanne Willis was born in St Albans. She has always wanted to be a children's author, and she spent her childhood writing and designing comics for her neighbours. Her first novel for Faber, The Hard Man of the Swings, won the North East Book Award. She is married with two children, and lives in North London.
