She wrote 12 collections of fiction and poetry, including the novel Sweet Darusia (2003) and the story collections The Short Life (2001) and Nation (2002). Russian, Polish, English, Serbian, and Belorussian have all been translated into her written works. When she was fifteen years old, her first poetry were published.
Her first piece of literature was published in Kyiv Magazine in 1992. Maria Matios' works are based on her family's unique experiences, which date back to 1790. She won the Taras Shevchenko National Prize in 2005 (for her novel Sweet Darusia) and the Book of the Year honor in 2004. Matios was re-elected as a deputy in the Ukrainian parliament in the 2014 election.
