Harvest of Empire by Juan Gonzalez

A sweeping history of the Latino experience in the United States- thoroughly revised and updated.

The first new edition in ten years of this important study of Latinos in U.S. history, Harvest of Empire spans five centuries-from the first New World colonies to the first decade of the new millennium. Latinos are now the largest minority group in the United States, and their impact on American popular culture-from food to entertainment to literature-is greater than ever. Featuring family portraits of real- life immigrant Latino pioneers, as well as accounts of the events and conditions that compelled them to leave their homelands, Harvest of Empire is required reading for anyone wishing to understand the history and legacy of this increasingly influential group.
Gonzalez, Juan: - Juan Gonzalez, a journalist and author, was a staff columnist at the New York Daily News from 1987 to 2016. He is cohost of the award-winning daily radio and television news program Democracy Now! A two-time recipient of the George Polk Award for commentary (1998 and 2010), Juan was the first reporter in New York City to consistently expose the health effects arising from the September 11th attacks and the cover-up of these hazards by government officials. He is a founder and past president of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), and a member of the organization's Hall of Fame. During his term as NAHJ president, Juan created the Parity Project, an innovative program that partners local communities with media organizations to improve coverage of the Latino community and to recruit and retain more Hispanic journalists writing literature reviews. He also spearheaded a successful movement among U.S. journalists to join other citizen groups in opposing the Federal Communications Commission's deregulation of media ownership restrictions. Juan's books include Fallout: The Environmental Consequences of the World Trade Center Collapse, Roll Down Your Window: Stories of a Forgotten America, and News for All the People: The Epic Story of Race and the American Media, coauthored with Joseph Torres.
