Hawkins: Jen The Hen by Jacqui Hawkins
Colin and Jacqui Hawkins first created Pat the Cat to help their daughter to learn to read. The rhyming split pages helped her to recognise lots of new words simply by changing a single letter as she turned each page. She quickly caught on to the basic mechanics of reading. The Hawkins then went on to produce Jen the Hen Mig the Pig Tog the Dog and Zug the Bug (also available from Dorling Kindersley). Teachers recognised the books as excellent introductions to reading and reviewers compared them to Dr Seuss. Children loved their rhyming humour. And parents have been using them successfully ever since!
Colin and Jacqui - a husband and wife team - are top children's writers and illustrators in the UK. Colin Hawkins was educated at art school in the north of England and then worked as an illustrator/designer for the Daily Express before working on magazines and in advertising. Jacqui Hawkins was trained as a graphic designer at Goldsmiths College. In 1979 the two had the idea to begin illustrating children's books together. Since then, Colin and Jacqui have created some of the most exciting books for children available today.
