Healing Art and Young People by Trevor Jeavons
In "Healing Art and Young People", Trevor Jeavons gives a valuable insight into the world of art therapy. Interweaving moving examples from his work with young patients with his professional and personal conclusions, Trevor Jeavons draws on his years of experience working with 'unhappy' children and adults to show that his individual approach can help a wide variety of young people to make sense of their lives and develop the strength to cope with their particular problems. This is not only a book for fellow therapists that examines complex issues and offers valuable advice for those working in the field of art therapy, it is a moving testament to the spirit and creativity of 'damaged' children that can be nourished by using the appropriate approach. Trevor Jeavons avoids jargon in this very accessible and absorbing account that can be enjoyed by anyone with an interest in the minds of children, as well as being an informative and thought provoking reference book for those working in the fascinating field of art therapy. The foreword by Julie Bryant, well respected in the field of art therapy, endorses Trevor Jeavons' desire to pass on the valuable lessons that he has learnt during his encounters with children referred to him for therapy and the spirit and imagination of many of those he portrays will remain with the reader for a long time.
"Trevor Jeavons is truly one of the pioneers in the development of art therapy as a professionHe was one of the first qualified art therapists to work in the area of special needs education, contributing to both research and practice in the field. His years of experience and wisdom have found a distillation in this book. I hope that the reader will be inspired by what it contains in the way that the profession has been inspired through Trevor's life-long contribution." Dr. Janek Dubowski, Head of Subject for Psychological Therapies, School of Human and Life Sciences, Roehampton University, London. "Lovely book, a little pearl... and I can't wait for my students to get hold of it." Vibeka Skov, Clinical Psychologist, artist and author. Director of 'Institute of Art Therapy', Gadbjerg, Denmark and 'School of Art Therapy', Trondheim, Norway. "The man is a breath of fresh air - sincerity oozes out of him. Thank you." Maria O'Brien, Senior Occupational Therapist, Spastics Welfare League, Brisbane, Australia. "Trevor is a skilled and communicative therapist. I enjoyed his enthusiasm." Prof Menehem Granoff, Tel Aviv, Chairman, The Association for the Advancement of Play in Israel. "Yours was an excellent workshop Trevor." Edith Kramer, Pioneer American Art Therapist/Author. "I have seen many children over the years who had benefited greatly from art therapy. There were many times when you saved me when I got stuck with some children who would not open up or bring down the barriers in my sessions. Art therapy is an essential part of a child and adolescent mental health service in my view." Dr Kusay Hadi, Clinical Director, Consultant Child Psychiatrist. "Dear Trevor, Thank you for being one of the presenting speakers. Your words and the passion you feel and radiate about art therapy were both inspirational and motivating..."
