Heart of Harefield by Lady Mary Shepherd
Mary P. Shepherd FRCS, MS was on the cardiothoracic surgical staff of Harefield Hospital for 20 years. No-one could be better qualified to take the reader through the 75 years of Harefield history to show the human side as well as the medical development. She has succeeded in presenting a warm yet professional story of medical service from the care of young wounded Australians to the ultra-technical heart surgery of the 1990s. Harefield Hospital lies in grounds that were once a quiet stretch of open countryside near the village of Harefield, Middlesex. Harefield Park was offered by its Australian owner Charles Billyard-Leake at the start of the First World War as a convalescent home for wounded Australians. This led to a chain of events that turned the country estate into a Hospital. After the First World War, during which some 50,000 Australians were treated there, it was acquired by Middlesex County Council who developed it as a sanatorium for the treatment of tuberculosis. During the Second World War, Harefield dealt with casualties north of the River Thames and, combined with St. Mary's Hospital, enlarged its scope to deal with general and thoracic war casualties. With the appearance of suitable drugs and consequent control of tuberculosis, the hospital developed its general practice with an emphasis on the treatment of chest disease. So much so that it soon became internationally famous, developing techniques for the surgical management of intrathoracic tuberculosis, diseases of the oesophagus and lung and, with the advent of heart surgery, a specialization in cardiac work. Harefield Hospital is today known internationally as a cardiothoracic centre of excellence. The Hospital has always been a happy place. The Australians who used it in the war looked at it as a home away from home, a place of hope - and there is ample evidence that today's patients feel exactly the same way.
Trained at Royal Free Hospital, London, qualifying 1957 MB, BS, MRCS, LRCP, Mary Shepherd had two houses jobs at hospitals in the Royal Free Group, with early surgical training at Didsbury, Manchester, and the Royal Free. She became thoracic surgical registrar, Harefield Hospital, in 1963, senior thoracic surgical registrar, Harefield, in 1964 and then Research Fellow, Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada, 1966-7. She returned as cardiothoracic consultant surgeon, Harefield, Clare Hall and associated hospitals in 1968.
