Mattie J.T. Stepanek began writing poetry at the age of three. In Heartsongs, Mattie explores the uncensored reality of living with a rare form of muscular dystrophy and with the grief associated with the loss of his three siblings to the same life-threatening condition. Heartsongs is a collection of the early poems and artwork of this gifted, courageous, award-winning poet.

J.T. Matthew Since the age of three, Stepanek, better known as Mattie, has been composing poems and short stories. Heartsongs, Journey Through Heartsongs, and Hope Through Heartsongs are the titles of his first three poetry collections. Mattie has featured on Oprah, Good Morning America, and Larry King, and his poetry has been published in newspapers and publications around the country. Mattie received the Children's Hope Medal of Honor, the Verizon Courage Award, and the Pediatric Nursing Association of America's Humanitarian Award in 2002.

Mattie is the Maryland State Goodwill Ambassador for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, as well as the National Goodwill Ambassador for the organization in 2002. He is homeschooled and lives in Maryland with his mother, Jeni.
